Maike Preissing, neurodivergent psychologist, synesthesia artist, and podcast host, shares her personal journey and insights into the science of the brain with synesthetic perception.
Synesthesia is a neurodivergent trait in which the brain responds to one sensory input with two simultaneous experiences. For Maike, hearing music or smelling a scent triggers vivid colors, textures, and patterns. Monday is yellow, the letter A is red, and when you speak to her, her brain types out subtitles in real time.
Roughly 4% of the global population experiences some form of synesthesia, making it a remarkable and often overlooked byproduct of human neurodiversity. In this talk, Maike shares her personal journey and insights into the science of the brain, the art inspired by synesthetic perception, and how understanding our unique minds can help us care for our well-being and unlock our creative potential.
