Northbrook Writes: Writing Dialogue that Moves
with Tom Houseman - Virtual
Monday, March 03
7:00pm - 8:30pm
Northbrook Public Library
Zoom Room 2 - Fiction & MediaJoin writer Tom Houseman for a workshop on writing dialogue. Presented in partnership with StoryStudio Chicago.
In this workshop, writer Tom Houseman will focus on approaches to writing dialogue in order to overcome some of the most common traps that writers fall into during dialogue-heavy scenes, such as:
- Dialogue that is excessively expository
- Conversations that are rambling or circular, or simply don't move the story forward the way that we want them to
- Characters that sound too similar
There are many approaches to dialogue writing, but this workshop will take an "objective" based approach borrowed from stage acting. Using examples from both literature and film, we will examine how to identify the objective of each character in a scene, and how to break the scene down into beats based around those objectives to help give our scenes forward momentum and make our characters active and specific.
Presented in partnership with StoryStudio Chicago.
This event will be held live on Zoom. Once you have registered, please check your email the morning of the program for a link.
